Women’s health benefits that are already in your plan

Your chronic condition may be covered differently, but only if it’s registered correctly. This blog unpacks:
  • What chronic medication benefits are and how they differ from your medical savings account.
  • Why chronic cover is not automatic, even for PMB conditions.
  • How unregistered chronic medication is often paid from savings
  • The financial impact of repeat scripts over a year.
  • The conditions most commonly overlooked when it comes to registration.
  • What the registration process changes in practical terms.
  • When to ask MedXpert to review your benefits and explain what applies to your option.

The hidden cost of not registering for chronic benefits

You pay your medical scheme premium every month. The debit goes off, you move on with your day, and somewhere in the fine print of your membership guide sits a list of benefits you have probably never read.

What follows is a practical look at what your plan likely already covers, with real examples from real schemes, so you can walk into your next appointment knowing exactly where you stand.

Most of these benefits are already built into your medical scheme plan like mammograms, pap smears, contraception, maternity support, and menopause care. The challenge is knowing they are there and knowing how to use them.

A few terms worth knowing upfront

  • A PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefit) is a condition your scheme is legally required to cover, regardless of which benefit option you are on.
  • A DSP (Designated Service Provider) is the hospital, specialist, GP, or pharmacy your scheme has partnered with. Using one keeps your costs predictable and avoids co-payments.
  • A co-payment is the portion of a bill you pay yourself, separate from what your scheme covers.
  • Your benefit option is the specific tier you are on within your scheme, such as Comprehensive, Classic, or Essential.
  • Where we mention “year”, we refer to calendar year, which is more commonly referred to as “annum”.

1. Mammograms

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to detect cancer early, often before any symptoms appear. Mammogram medical aid cover is available on most major South African schemes, though the age you need to be, and how often you can claim, differs by plan.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Bonitas BonStart Plus, BonCap, BonPrime, Standard 1 mammogram every 2 years for women over 40
Medshield PremiumPlus, MediBonus, MediPlus, MediCurve, MediCore 1 mammogram per female beneficiary aged 30 and older, per year
Medihelp MedVital, MedAdd, MedSaver, MedPrime 1 mammogram every 2-year cycle for woman 40 to 75 years
Momentum Evolve, Extender, Incentive, Custom 1 mammogram per female beneficiary 38 and older, once every 2 years
Most schemes require you to use a DSP to avoid a co-payment. Confirm your provider before booking.

2. Pap smears and the HPV PCR test

So, what does medical aid cover for women when it comes to cervical health? A pap smear is a cervical screening test that checks for abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer. It is one of the most straightforward women’s preventive care benefits available, and most schemes include it as part of their standard offering.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Bonitas BonStart Plus, BonCap, BonPrime, Standard For women ages 21 and 65, 1 pap smear every 3 years OR 1 HPV PCR test every 5 years
Medshield PremiumPlus, MediBonus, MediPlus, MediCurve, MediCore 1 pap smear per female beneficiary per year, regardless of their age (consultation fee excluded)
Medihelp MedVital, MedAdd, MedSaver, MedPrime 1 pap smear every 3-year cycle for women aged 21 to 65
Momentum (all plans) Pap smear consultation annually for women 15 and older; standard/LBC pap smear once a year OR HPV PCR screening test once every 3 years for women aged 21 to 65
Cervical cancer is highly treatable when caught early. Check whether your plan covers the consultation fee or whether you pay it separately.

3. HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine helps prevent the human papillomavirus infections responsible for most cervical cancers. The number of doses required depends on the age at which the course begins.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Bonitas BonStart Plus, BonCap, BonPrime, Standard 2 vaccines for girls aged 9 to 14 (once per lifetime); 3 vaccines for females aged 15 to 26 (once per lifetime)
Medshield PremiumPlus, MediBonus, MediPlus, MediCore, MediSaver, MediValue 1 course of 2 injections per female beneficiary aged 9 and older
Medihelp MedVital, MedAdd, MedSaver, MedPrime 2 HPV vaccinations for ages 10 to 14; OR 3 for ages 15 to 26
If you have a daughter on your medical scheme, check the age ranges and dose requirements on your specific plan – they vary.

4. Contraception cover

Contraception covered by medical aid in South Africa is one of the more variable benefits you will come across. Some cover oral and injectable options only. Others extend to devices like IUDs and implants. Age limits and script limits apply in most cases.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Bonitas BonStart Plus Up to R1 270 per family for women up to age 50; DSP required; 40% co-payment if no DSP used
Bonitas BonCap Up to R1 330 per family for women up to age 50; DSP required; 40% co-payment if no DSP used
Bonitas BonPrime Up to R1 970 per family for women up to age 50; DSP required; 40% co-payment if no DSP used
Bonitas Standard Up to R2 050 per family for women up to age 50; DSP required; 40% co-payment if no DSP used
Medshield PremiumPlus, MediBonus, MediPlus Up to 13 scripts per year at R235 per script for females aged 14 to 55 (not applicable if IUD in use) or 1x IUD per female beneficiary (this includes all IUD brands up to and including the price of the Mirena device, protocols applicable).
Medshield MediCurve Up to 13 scripts per year at R185 per script for females aged 14 to 55
Medihelp MedVital For women up to 50 years old: Oral/injectable/implantable contraceptives R160/month up to R2 205/year; IUD R2 450
Medihelp MedAdd, MedSaver For women up to 50 years old: Oral/injectable/implantable contraceptives R170/month up to R2 310/year; IUD R2 730
MedPrime For women up to 50 years old: Oral/injectable/implantable contraceptives R190/month up to R2 470/year; IUD R2 835
Check whether your plan covers long-acting options like IUDs or implants, or only monthly scripts. The difference in cover can be significant.

5. Maternity benefits

If you join a medical scheme while already pregnant, a 12-month waiting period typically applies before maternity benefits activate. Joining before conception gives you full access when you need it.

6. Female health programmes and menopause care

A growing number of schemes now offer structured programmes specifically for women’s health, going beyond standard screenings to include ongoing care, specialist navigation, and digital health tools.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Bonitas (all plans) Female Health Care Programme: guidance and support from women’s healthcare specialists, early detection support, access to specialised care, and online health assessments. Accessible to all female members aged 18 and older.
Discovery Health (all plans) Personalised Menopause Care via the Stella app: symptom assessment, online coaching support through perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, curated content, personalised lifestyle plans, and virtual GP consults trained in menopause care. Available to female members aged 35 to 70.
Menopause is one of the areas where women have historically had the least support from their medical scheme. These programmes represent a shift in support.

7. Infertility investigations

Infertility is a difficult journey. Knowing what your scheme covers can reduce at least one source of uncertainty.

It is worth noting the distinction upfront: infertility investigations are diagnostic procedures that help identify the cause. They are not the same as fertility treatment such as IVF, which falls under a different category with separate cover rules.

Scheme / Plan Benefit
Medshield (all plans) Infertility investigations per the Medical Schemes Act: hysterosalpingogram, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, uterine/tubal surgery, ovulation manipulation, hormonal bloods (FSH, LH, oestradiol, prolactin, TSH), basic counselling
Speak to your scheme directly about what falls under investigations versus treatment before incurring costs. The line can be blurry. Also note that if your investigation or treatment is considered to be a PMB then all schemes will cover the cost according the Diagnostic Treatment Pairs list.

Your benefits are already there. The question is whether you are using them

Every scheme, every plan, every benefit category covered here carries conditions, limits, and terms specific to your membership. What applies to a Medshield MediPlus member is different from what applies to someone on Discovery Saver. The only way to know exactly what you have is to check your specific plan.

That is where MedXpert comes in. If you want to know what your plan covers for women’s health, or whether a different plan would serve you better, the MedXpert team will walk you through it.
